How can we help you?

Catchupbooks is a free, client-side tool that turns bank statement CSVs into month-by-month catch-up plans. This page covers the questions people most often ask — getting started, how the tool works, what it does and does not do, and when to contact us directly.

01 / GETTING STARTED

Using Catchupbooks for the first time

Catchupbooks runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to install, no account to create, and no sign-up. Here is the full workflow:

  1. Export a CSV from your bank or card provider. Most banks let you download a statement as CSV in one click — look for "Download as CSV" or "Export transactions" in your online banking or card portal.
  2. Open the tool and either drag your CSV file onto the upload area or paste the CSV text directly.
  3. Check the column mapping. Catchupbooks tries to detect which columns hold the date, description, and amount. Confirm the mapping or adjust it with the dropdowns.
  4. Set your preferences. Choose a receipt threshold — any transaction at or above this amount gets flagged as needing a receipt review. Choose your session pace — how many minutes per session you want to spend.
  5. Generate your plan. The tool splits your transactions by calendar month and builds a checklist for each: how many transactions, money in and out, flagged receipts, recurring bills, unusual items, and estimated sessions at your pace. Download the plan as a CSV or print it.

02 / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about Catchupbooks

Which banks and card providers does Catchupbooks support?

Catchupbooks works with any provider that can export transaction data as a CSV file with at least three columns: date, description, and amount. Most banks, credit card issuers, and payment platforms (including Stripe, PayPal, and accounting software that exports CSV) produce files that work. The specific column headers do not matter — Catchupbooks detects them automatically and lets you adjust the mapping if needed.

If your provider does not offer a CSV export, you may be able to paste the transaction data as tab-separated or comma-separated text. Catchupbooks does not connect directly to any bank or payment system — it only reads files you provide.

Is my financial data safe? What happens to my CSV file?

Your data never leaves your computer. Catchupbooks runs entirely as client-side JavaScript in your browser. When you upload or paste a CSV, every byte is processed on your own machine — nothing is sent to a server, stored in a database, or logged anywhere. There is no account system, no tracking, and no analytics service. The tool does not set cookies.

The data exists only in your browser's memory while the page is open. When you close the tab, it is gone. If you download the generated plan as a CSV, that file is created by your browser and saved to your chosen location — Catchupbooks has no access to where you save it and no ability to read it afterwards.

See the Privacy page for full details.

Why does Catchupbooks not tell me which expenses are deductible?

Whether an expense is deductible or claimable depends on your country, your tax regime, your business structure, and your specific circumstances. Catchupbooks is a planning tool that organises your transactions into a structured checklist — it is not a tax advisor and does not determine tax treatment of any expense.

The tool flags transactions above a threshold you choose, so you know which ones may need a receipt. It also identifies recurring descriptions (likely subscriptions or regular bills you can categorise once) and transactions that look unusual compared to your normal pattern. But it does not and cannot say what qualifies as a deduction. That is a question for a qualified accountant or tax professional in your jurisdiction.

How is Catchupbooks different from accounting software like Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent?

Catchupbooks is not accounting software. It does not connect to banks, does not categorise transactions for tax, does not file returns, and does not provide accounting advice. What it does is solve one specific problem: you are months behind on your books and do not know where to start.

Accounting software assumes you want to run your books in it permanently. Catchupbooks assumes you are behind and need a recovery plan — a month-by-month checklist that tells you what to tackle in each session. It complements accounting software rather than competing with it: you can use the catch-up plan to organise what you bring to your accountant or enter into your accounting system.

Does the Premium tier exist yet? When will it launch?

The Premium tier is planned but has not been built yet. The free tool is the complete tool today — every feature that can work without a server is available at no cost. Premium would add features that require a server backend (saved plans, multi-statement merge, categorised CSV export), but that infrastructure does not exist yet.

There is no launch date for Premium. When it becomes available, it will be announced on the Pricing page.

Can I use Catchupbooks offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded. The tool and its JavaScript are served from Cloudflare Workers, but after the initial page load the entire application runs client-side. If you have loaded the page while online, you can continue using it even if your internet connection drops — all processing happens in the browser with no server calls.

What Catchupbooks does not do yet
